When should you stop having a text book ‘birthday party’?

 I hate parties.

Grown folks shouldn’t have birthday parties. I’m convinced.

I apologize to everyone reading this who thinks that birthday parties are just great! Perhaps right now you are reminiscing about that trendy club at which you and your ‘friends’ spent hours drinking and dancing the summer night away. The DJ probably gave you a few ‘shout outs’ and the crowd was enamoured by your special appearance. Good for you.

Let me clarify for you the event that I have in mind. … (more…)

The ‘Black’ Alternative School debate

It might be all a matter of semantics, but as education is the basis for the future of our nation – is there any particular reason why we still need to use the term ‘Black?’   I understand that this is how we, in North America have come to socialize ourselves, as Black , or (white) – and everyone else is somewhere in between. I don’t even know what a ‘black’ education means. I don’t understand what being ‘black’ truly entails. I cannot seem to align what the ideas of ‘black’ culture are with my education – my life. Using ‘Afrocentric’ and ‘Black’ intermittently is not acceptable. (more…)

What Dr. Spock didn’t tell you

I am not here to discourage you, nor do I intend to enlighten you, I am merely here to inform you that becoming a parent is most challenging in the area of self growth.

I am here to disabuse you of the notion that the few moments that we witness in the presence of others and their young, is a representation of their parenting experience. Not even close.

I am here to disabuse you of the notion that the cost of having a child lies within the furniture purchases – the back to school and Christmas clothing sprees, birthday parties, RESPs and hockey lessons.  It is more than being unable – or resisting the urge to splurge relentlessly on ourselves. More than the vacation we planned to take, the car we promised to purchase… (more…)

Who are your friends?

Who are they, really? My sis and I have gone over this question quite a few times, and I have since then extended the conversation to my mentor and loving friend, Michelle. All in all we have concluded, that platonic relationships, like every other area of our lives need to be defined by a set of boundaries. Not rules. Boundaries.

Michelle confessed her truth’s in her own journals and was kind enough to share them with me. Two of those quotes are:

‘I believe true friendships withstand the impetuous of youth, naivety, ignorance and the confines of our identities.’ ‘I believe that as a wise friend defined, most people are in entanglements rather than relationships – entanglements rightfully keep us locked in a limbo state.’  (more…)

Ain’t nothing going on but the rent

Do you rent your home? I did. For 10 years, and have resided at 10 DIFFERENT addresses during that time.

And you know what?  Every dime was worth it. You will hear ‘naysayers’- you know – the ones with an astounding sense of entitlement – tell you that rent is a waste of money. Putting a roof over your head is not a waste of money, friends. Having a place to call your home – a place of peace and satisfaction is essential to human wellness. (more…)

The privatesphere – lost journals of a house/parent

I am not you. Not today.  But If I may – speak for you? There is no easy way to describe feelings of loneliness when everyone knows you share a home with someone. There is no comfortable way to express feelings of emptiness and inadequacy when you are employed by life to guard its greatest miracle. Where does the parent – at – home go to seek purpose and fulfillment? Is it to the kitchen? What does it look like? A baby’s smile? What does it sound like?     A baby’s cry? Is the reward the look on a spouses face when they come through the door? Is the accomplishment in the groans of a satisfying meal?  To whom should they turn to for acknowledgement, justification or confirmation? There is no boss. There is no smiling mother. No friend to cheer. Just the vast chasm of a life poles apart from the one left behind.

What’s in a Job, huh?

What’s in a job, huh?  What’s in it but the money? Why do we set ourselves up so that we have to work for our entire lives? Are we mentally stunted? Are we evolving – or are we in a constant state of de-evolution? What’s the difference between this job and the next… or how about the one’s before? People. Pay. Pressure. Have these become the Puppeteers of our life? What about Purpose? Persistence? And you know you want Pleasure… Free will is your power. We are slaves to much – but moreso to our lifestyle than anything else. Would you live in one room for a year in order to travel the world the next? One year. Would you move in with your family for 3 years to complete your education? To pay off your bills? Many us of simply cannot. Families cannot choose to move three – four or even two people – wherever they choose. Have you ever had the courage to change – to become who you really want to be? To let go mentally of all that binds you? To close your eyes and bid it farewell even though when you open them – these things are still there? They are still there – but they have no hold over  you. You can walk away if you have to – and never regret the day you purchased them. After all – one day you will certainly leave them behind.  Working for a salary is a reality – but it can be unproductive. It must not be the start and finish of your day. It must not be the ‘be all’ and ‘end all’ of what you consider to be a ‘career’ … let there be that which you do and that which you are. If they must be separate things – let them be. And for those who have the blessing of both – may God continue to grant you favour.

This last weekend, my husband and I sat at the kitchen table teaching our son the value of time. WE forget that when one is young, the days stretch before us unbearable and unending. Yet when we are old – we have no time.

We have no time to read (more…)

I can say Part III

Filed under: Personal, Uncategorized — by dacostad @ 5:53 pm

I believe the most clever personality trait is the ability to change who you are. Some call this enlightenment. Others call it schizophrenia.

I believe that 99% of us have the control to make ourselves happier.   (more…)
