When working pays you a penny and costs you a dime

Let’s cut to the chase. I don’t want to have to continuously bring money to work. Many jobs today require us to have money before we even make it – and I just wanted to check to see if anyone else has a problem with it because there seems to be an endless piggy bank supply of loose change at everyone else’s house.

In one week, a worker might have to bring

$5 for the lottery (oh yes, the irony)

$5 for ‘Luanne’s’ parting gift

$10 for ‘Catherine’s’ baby shower

$5 for ‘Alice’s’ birthday cake

$10 for Tim Horton dashes

And…

$2 for jeans day

PARDON? Jeans Day? Now I wouldn’t want to divert and make this a dress code issue – but is it okay for a workplace to force me to pay to wear something that I already spent money on (and hopefully have not purchased from one of their subsidiaries) ?

I don’t care if it goes to charity – because the company gets the tax receipt … they get to claim the total amount of contributions for a nice kickback and you get…(drum roll please) that’s right…wait for it…

NOTHING!

And I don’t appreciate you people who don’t miss an opportunity to scan my attire every Friday to then ask “Did you pay your $2?” –

Who are you-the Financial Fashion police? Get a promotion already and leave me alone.

Now back to my weekly work costs. It costs me approximately

$8 in gas to drive back and forth to work each day which equals $40/week based on 1.00/litre. Right now gas prices in the GTA are between 1.26 – 1.36/litre. Go figure.

So lets just round that off to $50 which is already a significant portion of my weekly net pay. Then $37, for extra non tax deductible contributions. So far I’m almost at $90 –and I haven’t gotten paid yet. What’s left for lunch? What’s left for tithes and offerings? What’s left for ME???  I remember the good old days when going to work required gas …and maybe some change for a hot dog. Now I have to make sure there’s extra money on the VISA, money in the bank and change in my desk drawer.

In exchange for this I should be able to wear the same outfit to work everyday – because now I don’t have any fancy money for the fancy pants you want me to wear on my legs that get stuck under a desk for eight hours everyday. Noone sees the darn pants. Noone cares.  LOL – this is for you Heather…

  2. OMG. How true.
Now don’t get me wrong I love my PT job, but that is exactly what it is PART TIME.
I get one uniform shirt, I have to pay for any others. You lose your name thag, you have to pay to replace it.
We have had one Birthday party, that I contributed to, but didn’t attend.
Also, there is baby shower this weekend. I am scheduled to work, all day. You know I am going to pay, b/c I don’t want to look like the cheap ass.
Not counting gas, breakfast and lunch(which I bring), this is adding up to more thatn I bargained for.
